Self-love is something a lot of girls and women struggle with. There is an overwhelming number of examples in the media of how we should look, act, think, and feel, and that’s what makes self-love an act of rebellion. You are amazing whether you fit those examples or not, and at Authentic Girl Coaching, we think every girl’s authentic self is her best self. In today’s blog post, we’re recommending a few ways to practice self-love any and every day, including a way to use your AGC personal daily journal. Read on to learn more.
Pursue Your Passions
When you are sad, bored, or upset, what makes you look forward to the next day? Whatever it is, try to make it a regular part of your life. Finding and pursuing your passions is an important act of self-love. If you’re excited by music, see if you can sign up for lessons or join the school band, orchestra, or choir. Do you dream of being a soccer star? Take a leap and try out for your local team. Do you always feel better when you’re drawing, painting, or sculpting? Sign up for art classes when next semester rolls around.
The opposite is also true. If there are activities in your life that have lost their sparkle, talk to your parents about finding other ways to spend that time. You can’t skip your algebra homework, but if you dread going to your ballet class every week, then talk to a parent or guardian about something else you can do that does excite you. You deserve to have something to look forward to every day.
Take Care of Your Body
Are we telling you to go on a diet? NO. We just want you to treat your body well by giving it what it needs. Remember to drink plenty of water and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Your body will thank you, and you may be amazed by how good you feel.
Your body does a lot of amazing things, like letting you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the world around you. Make sure you appreciate it and what it does! Other ways to take care of yourself include regularly brushing and flossing your teeth as well as fun activities like dancing and taking bubble baths.
Choose Friends, Not Frenemies
As you navigate school and changing grades, it’s easy to end up hanging out with people you don’t really like just because you’ve spent a lot of time together or you have the same classes. However, if those “friends” are more like frenemies, and spending time with them always makes you feel bad, then it may be time to focus on other people in your life. If the person who makes you feel that way is an adult, then talk to a parent or guardian about what’s going on.
Remember, you don’t have to stay friends with someone, especially if they are always complaining or if they insult you or make fun of you. Instead, start spending more time with people who love and appreciate you and make you smile. You are amazing! You deserve to surround yourself with people who think so too.
Practice Positive Self-Talk
A lot of us have a little voice inside our head that points out when we do something wrong or reminds us of mistakes we’ve made. It’s trying to help you follow the rules and be a good person, but sometimes it can get to be too much. That’s why it’s important to practice positive self-talk, and balance out that little voice with reminders that you are a wonderful person who tries her best! One great way to practice positive self-talk and self-love is journaling. When you need a boost, break out your personal daily journal and try answering a few of these prompts:
- What is one of your favorite personality traits?
- What are a few of your strengths?
- What is something you have done recently that you’re proud of?
- What is your favorite part of your body?
- What is something you’ve done that your younger self would be wowed by?
- What is something kind you’ve done recently?
- What is something you’re really good at?
- What are a few things you have in common with a role model of yours?
- What is a compliment someone gave you recently?
You can write as much or as little as you want, but try to keep it positive! Everyone has their own strengths and abilities, and we promise there are a few things that you can do better than anyone around you. If you’re having trouble thinking of positive things to say about yourself, try getting together a few friends and writing compliments about each other!
